Elfstedentocht - the Netherlands

This photograph is taken by a new young Dutch photographer (http://www.photobynikos.nl/) who gives and impression on the Eflstedentocht (Eleven cities tour); a 120 miles speed skating match and leisure skating tour on natural ice touching each and every city (by history) of the province of Friesland (North of the Netherlands). It is held, in practice in January of February and not more than once in a year, when the natural ice along the entire course is at least 6 in thick; sometimes on consecutive ears, other times with gaps that may exceed 20 years.

The last time it was held was in 1997 and this year it looked like the ice would finally be thick enough to have a new Elfstedentocht! My husband and I almost booked our tickets back to Holland, though unfortunately the whole event was blown off.

I love this pohotograph; mainly because I can relate to the story behind it.
